[WALKING WITH A GHOST] Japan’s Ghost makes important music. A vital presence since 1984, Ghost has a nomadic lineup including a former member of White Heaven, an actual Buddhist monk, and every weird improvised instrument you can think of (hurdy gurdy? Check. Vacuum pipes? Oh yeah). With a beyond-global sound that defies category, these cats have played gigs at ancient ruins, temples and subway stations, and have stated they would not play here until the Bush administration was kaput. [LASER LADS] As rock-’n’-roll cause célèbres go, fighting for the right to incorporate lasers into one’s stage performance doesn’t rank too high on the altruism scale. But c’mon: You’re probably not going to donate money to build a school in Gambia no matter how much Bono urges you to, right? So why not drop $5 to support local post-punks Wow & Flutter’s war against OMSI? According to the band’s press release, it plans to “blind as well as deafen their audience” with a light show designed to shame the science museum for “snubbing” them over the years. Gimmicks aside, W&F is one of Portland’s best acts, with a sound that rages like Fugazi minus the alienating self-seriousness. Gimmicks considered, this should be awesome.
