[PETA SOUNDS] It’s been 15 years since a tweener antipodean’s cutesy jingle ’bout Evan Dando envy won flickering proto-indie amusement, but indulging in the same hook-strewn shambling cleverness and ever-more-creepy resistance to age, Ben Lee has somehow squeezed out a genuine career. The, ahem, World’s Sexiest Vegetarian (he was nominated by PETA) toured with Bens Kweller and Folds, traded up from Claire Danes to marry Ione Skye, and continues to record albums both helplessly catchy and irritatingly content. In retrospect, that initial novelty tune—“I Wish I Was Him”—seems less sarcastic or wistful than a frank statement of intent. When life gives you Lemonheads… JAY HORTON. 9 pm. 231 SW Ankeny St., 248-4579. $14 advance, $16 day of show. 21+.

[HIGHS, LOWS AND HEAVENLY BLOWS] Pete Kember, known to music geeks as Sonic Boom, returns to the States with his band Spectrum on the heels of the band’s new EP, War Sucks. It’s a record that sees him delving deeper into the world of psychedelia (and his never-ending supply of psychedelics). It includes the frightening title track, a cover of a Red Crayola anthem that features the sounds of a nebelwerfer, a rocket launcher used by the Germans in World War II that U.S. troops not-so-affectionately called “The Screaming Meemie.” ROBERT HAM. 9 pm. 830 E Burnside St., 231-9663. $12 advance, $14 day of show. 21+.

[NATIVE TRANSPLANTS] As proof the Portland music scene is a magnet for a certain kind of attitude, consider that bearded weirdos Nurses migrated from Idaho to Colorado and Southern California before landing here last year, and yet the band sounds as if it were born in a dilapidated shack somewhere on the outskirts of town. Working in the same amorphous vein as current indie heroes like Animal Collective and Grizzly Bear, the group crafts quirky, vaguely folky tunes sharpened by an odd sense of melody. Imagine a rustic Beach Boys, and you’re partially there. MATTHEW SINGER. 9 pm. 232 SW Ankeny St., 248-1600. Free. 21+.
