[NOSTALGIC POP] I have a huge crush on Thao Nguyen. There, I said it. The girl is cute, but mostly I’m in love with her songs—tight, meticuously crafted gems that combine prickly acoustic guitars, warm, upbeat percussion and Thao’s inviting voice. Few writers are able to capture the interesection between nostalgic childhood whimsy and that strange period where you are sort of an adult but still do stupid shit on a regular basis, but Thao’s got it down to pefection. When she sings “We brave bee stings and all/ We don’t dive, we cannonball/ We splash our eyes with chemicals” on “Swimming Pools” you don’t just know what she’s talking about. You sing along. This is a welcome development, as the Omaha-based electronic act has always had a knack for angular dance pop, but until the release of last year’s Fasciinatiion, it was so busy filling those excellent melodies with references to ovarian canals that the whole experience came off as slightly unsettling. [FRANCOPHILLIA] I’m a little bit of a Francophile. The food, the music, the film, the comic books: I love it. But I don’t speak any French. And part of me doesn’t want to actually learn French, because everything sounds so exotic and sexy and cool—learning the language might kill the mystique. Take Marianne Dissard’s l’entredeux, a gorgeously arranged album full of what I assume to be sexy lovesongs. Dissard’s voice is knowing and her timing, over hypnotically picked guitar, is punchy and dramatic. If the lyrics were bad it would just ruin the whole thing for me. Oh, wait!
