[MONSTERS OF NORTHWEST FOLK] Equally at home delivering a meticulously crafted protest song or a hilarious improvised ditty about the folks in the front row, Jim Page provides a master class in songwriting and folk singing every time he plays. Busking on Seattle’s streets since 1971, today he’s a revered veteran, the Northwest’s own Woody Guthrie. Brian Cutean (who sometimes spells his last name “QTN”), meanwhile, looks like Gandalf with a guitar, and crafts songs with thickets of wordplay that nonetheless cut a direct path to the heart. [FREE JAZZ MEETS PUNK] The latest Creative Music Guild ear test brings raucous Swedish extreme jazzers the Thing (saxman Mats Gustafsson, drummer Ingebrigt Håker Flaten, bassist Paal Nilssen-Love), who’ve forged a molten confection of free jazz and punk rock. Avant-jazz fans will relish the band’s screechy covers of Don Cherry and David Murray, while adventurous listeners from the rock side of the aisle will dig their demolitions of tunes by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, the White Stripes, PJ Harvey, and more. [THIS REINVENTED GRUNGE RELIC AIN'T A PART OF ME] One of the side benefits of growing older is that it’s harder and harder to get irked by the batshit stunts pulled by rock stars you idolized growing up. Like, say, hip-hop producer extraordinaire Timbaland and ex-Soundgarden/Audioslave singer Chris Cornell’s decision to step together into a size 62 pair of Bad Idea Jeans in the name of “bringing rock to the club,” or whatever. What’s weird about Scream—their collabo—is that it’s hardly terrible, so long as one approaches it as a WTF curio, in a detached, bemused way. But it’s not gonna be anybody’s favorite album ever. RAY CUMMINGS. 8 pm. 1332 W Burnside St., 225-0047. $37. All ages.

[^^^]Maria Taylor, The Whispertown 2000, Matt Sheehy
[ON THE MEND] Matt Sheehy’s gorgeous folk-pop record Tigerphobia was just released on vinyl, and it’s a cause for celebration. Tigerphobia was one of the more overlooked albums of 2008, delicate electronics and acoustic guitar fare that sounds like Andrew Bird messing around in John Vanderslice’s kitchen. Sheehy’s since assembled a nice little backing band called the Menders, and I’ve heard nothing but great things about the group’s new songs. Tonight, though, is a special chance to see him solo, as he clicks, claps and loops his way straight to your heart. MICHAEL MANNHEIMER. 9 pm. 830 E Burnside St., 231-9663. $12. 21+.

[^^^]Castanets, Michael Hurley, The Old Believers
[FREAKY FOLKY NOISEY] This is an extremely solid bill all the way through. Headliner Castanets—the project of occasional Portlander Raymond Raposa—creates waves of textured sound that morph in and out of structured form, his psychedelic, soul-searching folk songs dissolving as suddenly as they began; openers the Old Believers play digital-age folk-pop with the aching sweetness of lovers’ harmonies. The surprise here is Michael Hurley of Holy Modal Rounders fame. Portland-based Hurley writes sparse, sometimes funny and sometimes heartbreaking freak-folk tunes, though his legacy predates that genre tag by a long while. His recent rediscovery by Devendra Banhart has brought Hurley back into the national spotlight as of late, but the songwriter’s warmth and free-wheeling approach to songwriting are timeless qualities. CASEY JARMAN. 8:30 pm. 1001 SE Morrison St., 239-7639. $7.

[^^^]St. Frankie Lee, Shoeshine Blue, When the Broken Bow
[FOLK IMPLOSION] “The past has gone away,” croon Chelsea Campbell and Derrick Martin of St. Frankie Lee on “The Boom,” a darkly folky number from the local purveyors of prime Americana. As an assessment of St. Frankie, however, it’s wholly inaccurate. The group seems to have crawled through the jagged underbelly of America’s musical history and emerged bloodied and ready to teach lessons learned through its gritty brand of folk and country. The highly stompable sounds are punctuated with call-and-response choruses and amply off-kilter harmonization, the kind of music that has listeners dancing in the darkness. [^^^]Yann Tiersen, Asobi Seksu
[BITTERSWEET SYMPHONIES] Yann Tiersen is a French composer who deals in delicate minimalism and melancholy. His name will be known to most thanks to his romantic musical themes for the soundtrack to Amelie, but his body of work extends further back (film scores, early works) and forward (a rock phase, and a fantastic must-buy collaboration with singer Shannon Wright). Tiersen’s latest album is a soundtrack for a 2008 film based on the life story of the great French sailor Eric Tabarly. Unfortunately, that’s not what’s on offer tonight. Instead, Tiersen is in live rock band mode on this tour; the saddest music tonight will play on the heartstrings of fans who wait in vain for Amelie tunes that are relegated to the encores. NATHAN CARSON. 8:30 pm. 128 NE Russell St., 284-8686. $15 advance, $17 day of show. All ages.
