LocalCut Roundup: Ryan Dolliver on Penny Jam, Jaguar Love For Two Bucks, Blue Giant Tour Portland, Help KZME Keep It Local
Another day, another news roundup on the hallowed virtual space that is LocalCut. Fire up the aggregators!
- The nearly-weekly Penny Jam videos just keep on getting better and better. And they are starting to turn these things around much quicker, too. Filmed just one month ago during First Thursday, the newest installment of Portland’s version of the Take Away Shows finds soulful crooner Ryan Dolliver picking his guitar and singing “All Night Long” at swanky NW outlet EWF Modern (that’s East West Fusion for all you philistines) with the help of two cute backup singers. And for the record, LocalCut is 100% behind the headband. We still have a little bit of Bonzi love left in our cold, cold hearts.

UPDATE: Just got word that Jaguar Love’s drummer has injured his back and they’re canceling tonight’s show. The band hopes to reschedule for a later date. Sorry, y’all!
- We just got word that Jaguar Love—the trio composed of former members of the Blood Brothers and Pretty Girls Make Graves—are playing a last-minute show tonight at Tube for $2. Yes, you read that correctly: you can get into the Jaguar Love show by paying with this. Did somebody say something about a shitty economy?
- Tonight is also the first night of local supergroup Blue Giant’s “Portland Tour 08.” Originally an offshoot of husband and wife duo Viva Voce, Blue Giant has expanded to a whooping seven members for its live show—including the Decemberists’ Chris Funk—to bolster the country-rock influenced songwriting of Kevin and Anita Robinson. Tonight the troupe headlines a bill at Holocene with Golden Bears (Giant Seth Lorinczi is also a member) and have promised lots of “surprise guests”—including, according to this poster, Corin Tucker (formerly of Sleater-Kinney), Sam Coomes (Quasi, Heatmiser), Corinna Repp (Tu Fawning), Rachel Blumberg (Norfolk & Western, etc.) and more. Put some fenders on your bike, cuz it might be a rainy one.
- Finally, new all-local (!!!) radio station KZME, which is set to hit the airwaves on 91.1 FM sometime next year, would like to hear your input. KZME has an FM license and construction permit, and they will be entirely dedicated to playing local music and dealing with community issues. The question, then, is what do you want to see in this station? They have the opportunity, with the right channels, to be an awesome and invaluable member of the tight-knit Portland music scene.
