Zac Pennington Shares His Vinyl Shopinglist

parenthetical girlsWe like lists here at LocalCut. And charticles. Have you seen all the numbers involved with the MFNW cover story this week? So when I stumbled upon this list it was just too difficult not to share it with you lovely readers. Dusted Magazine has always been reliable over the years as a site that tends to cover records that get passed over by the usual online pundits; and though they tend to skew coverage to the more obscure (re: weird) end of the spectrum, it’s always a way to discover interesting new music.

This week, to coincide with the release of Parenthetical Girls Entanglements (check out Bob Ham’s profile from today’s paper), they asked lead Girl and former Mercury music editor Zac Pennington to share a recent list of vinyl purchases—many picked up right here at some of our favorite shops. Here’s a snippet from his list:

2. Frank Sinatra - The September of My Years (Everyday Music in NW Portland)
“Tonight will not swing. Tonight is for serious” opens the essay on the sleeve. Concept bludgeoning as concept record, Sinatra’s weepy nostalgia piece about getting old and getting on is surprisingly effective – with nearly total credit going to arranger/conductor Gordon Jenkins. Quote Frank: “The way this guy writes strings, if he were Jewish, he’d be unbearable.” I have no idea what that means.

Bonus MP3!
Bob Ham wrote at length about this track, but I thought it would be fun to share this little Bacharachean gem of a pop song with you today. So here’s “A Song For Ellie Greenwich,” and its “Close to You” hook:
