Best of the Blogs: Keep Portland Weird Edition

parenthetical-girls-4It’s been a long couple of weeks for us here at LocalCut. From the seemingly never-ending MFNW guide (now available at your favorite record store!) to cover stories and job-juggling and hours spent watching the Chinese divers and new Blazer import Rudy Fernandez embarrass Dwight Howard, we’re bound to miss a few things. So here’s another installment in our increasingly regular series that collects all the best news we can find on the web that we were too busy to post on. Enjoy!

- Pitchfork—the big bad wolf of all music criticism—gave an accurate and pretty glowing 8.2 review to ethereal folkie Grouper’s new record Dragging a Dead Deer Up a Hill. Yeti magazine founder and Portland centered critic Mike McGonigal penned the piece, and he also gave a nearly identical score to Eat Skull last month.

- Said the Gramophone have the first track and a few nice words about Parenthetical Girls new record Entanglements, set to drop Sept. 9 on fancy German record label Tomlab. I haven’t heard it yet, but I think I can safely say that anything described as “like being covered in three feet of velvet and jewels and creams” is most definitely my cup of tea.

- Aquarium Drunkard posted an interview with Horse Feather’s frontman Justin Ringle and he talks about the five places in Portland he couldn’t live without. The list is sort of predicable, but you gotta love the Valentine’s inclusion.

- Pitchfork also has an interview with this summer’s hottest Swedish indie-pop starlet Lykke Li, and she names the Doug Fir as her favorite musical venue. Apparently her trip to Portland involved sunshine, bikes, weed, and riding the bus around town. If she ever decides to move her I don’t think she’ll have a problem fitting in.

Bonus PDX Pop Now! vidoes:
LC friend and video contributer Asher Sandberg-Lewis just put the finishing touches on the last of his visual documents of last month’s PDX Pop Now! festival, and like the rest of his work, it looks and sounds great. And I swear this is the final mention of PDX Pop Now! for the summer. I owe someone a po boy if I bring it up again.
