Catch That Beat 4 at the Skidmore Bluffs and Marriage Records HQ, Saturday, Aug. 9

yachtWords by Nilina Mason-Campbell. Photos by Nilina and Jordan Strong. Those crazy Catch that Beat kids! If you kept an eye on the festival’s website, Short Hair for Peace, you’d know Jona Bechtolt (YACHT) and co. were having a hard time finding an Astoria location at which to hold the latest edition of annual outsider music fest Catch that Beat. Throughout the week, the intended location switched from area to area before the decision was made Friday night to shuck having it in Astoria altogether and hold the event in Portland. Didn’t seem like too many people were kept in the loop about the change—all updates being conducted via text message and the web—but the crowd did grow as the day wore on. The activities kicked off at 3 pm at the Skidmore Bluffs before moving to the parking lot of Marriage Records at dusk to carry on into the am.

A cable-access vibe ran throughout the event, from a pair of girls bumping and grinding behind Kites at Night to a Jerry Springer twist during YACHT’s set. Hmmm…YACHT goes from pedaling Converse to being pummeled? How could this happen? Some guy walking his pug decided to enter the parking lot and get physical with YACHT’s Jona and Claire without any provocation. One minute the pair was singing while everyone danced (many shirtless lads). The next minute, the twosome was still singing, but being hit and yelled at. Classy. The guy soon turned and left as quickly and as oddly as he’d come. Then a limo arrived to unload a number of curious passerbys, bringing the “huh?” quotient up just a notch. All in a day’s work. All in a day’s work. And all without a single bandana in sight…

Why not listen to YACHT’s remix for Stereolab’s “Self Portrait with ‘Electric Brain’” whilst you adore these photos?

Top photo by Nilina. These photos are late because we are slow. Mostly me, that is. And Clara Ridabock went to this, too, meaning we may get even more photos. -Ed.
