Hi PDX peeps! BEDM will be a part of Wonder Ballroom’s Talking Heads + Cure tribute night on Saturday 8/16. I’ve put together a live band lineup for the event, and instead of simply doing covers, we will be performing what I like to call ‘Live Mashups’. Myself (vox/turntable), Dave Allen (bass), Benjy Rickard (guitar/synth), and Paul Alcott (drums) will be tweaking Talking Heads and Cure songs over the grooves of Aaliyah, Michael Jackson, and Gang Of Four.
Well, I have a live mashup to share with you. It’s got an Aaliyah groove with Talking Heads (Once In A Lifetime) and Cure (Lullaby) lyrics. There’s some Van Halen ‘Eruption’ guitar in there too. I’ve attached a jpeg of the track artwork …
The idea is not only to spread love and musical goodness, but to promote the show a bit too. I mean, booking Dave for bass duties wasn’t cheap ya’ll! (Just kidding—love ya’ DA!) I will have another Live Mash to send you next week too. This time, with a Michael Jackson groove. I had hoped to get Paul into the basement last weekend to lay down some drums in order to finish it sooner but somehow his recent schedule performing with Dat’r, Dykeritz, Sweater, and Lackthereof got in the way. Paul. He’s a beut. We’re going to have fun. Also, former full-time BEDM multiskilled multi-instrumentalist Benjy Rickard is laying down the guitar and synth. Yes, Benjy has got multi-skillz.
I really hope you check out the mp3. I am very excited about this event as I think it is going to be a unique and ultra-tweaked way to geek out on music for an evening. Here’s the official event details:

says:I like BEDM, but I can sing the lyrics of “Purple Haze” to the melody for “Gilligan’s Island” and use some Motley Crue samples in the background. Will you write about that?

(post author) says:but, it must be said, dmoefunk is gonna have to take his game up to a whole ‘nother level to match this.
and Mikey,
Yes. Yes I will. But my gut tells me that this will still be way better than your song.

says:Playing on this mashup with Jon and Benjy in BEDM studio was the shit…dropping a bass line on an Aaliyah cut with Benjy on the Moog too was really cool and there’s something weird about playing the Billie Jean bass line alongside Psycho Killer, wait til you hear that one. get em posted Jon and I’m looking forward to playing them live on the 16th too.

@Mikey- hehe. I totally think you should do a mashup using TV themes. That is a brilliant idea. I don’t know about your pairings though. If I was to go with the “Purple Haze” riff, I think it would work much better with the horn blasts from the show intro to Hawaii 5-0. You’d have to shift some pitch stuff around but it sounds pretty wicked in my head at least. If I was looking to match up the “Gilligan’s Island” melody with a Hendrix riff, I think I’d have to slow the Gilligan theme down (to half time, maybe?) and plunk it over ‘Driving South’ from the BBC Hendrix collection. That is nasty riff and pretty much the most wicked guitar solo I’ve ever heard. Sometimes I hear that solo in my head and wonder why any of us even bother picking up a guitar.
I don’t think I’d touch any Crue though—too much distracting cultural baggage. I know that might sound weird—and maybe it’s inconsistent coming from someone who’s about to spin ‘Eruption’—just my gut instinct is all. If I had to turn it into a mathematical equation I guess I would look like: first Van Halen album = classic rock. All Motley Crue = butt rock. Nice fuzzy drumkit, Tommy!
The cool thing about mashups to me is how they really seem to galvanize and challenge peoples’ perceptions of what art is supposed to be or what it is supposed to do. I think peoples’ enjoyment of mashups are just as much about their social connections and triggered memories as they are about the sound of mix itself. The same could be said for art in general but I think we often take that for granted in regards to music. I guess what I’m trying to say is that sometimes we take music too seriously? Or take ourselves too seriously perhaps? I don’t know. Just a semi-random thought.
One of the most powerful memories I have relating to music comes from a day when my father and I were driving up to a Mariner’s game. I had just gottin’ into The Animals (and Eric Burden in particular). I was pretty excited because I thought my dad might really have fond memories of their songs. They were famous at the time my dad was a teen (before the Beatles got ‘weird’ as he likes to put it, although the Rolling Stones of the late 60’s are the ‘greatest rock band ever’ according to my dad, so go figure). Anyways—I’m getting way off track here—so I put in the cd and my dad just starts freaking out on the bass lines of those classic Animals tunes. He’s pointing at the cd player and just belting “You hear that? You hear that bass?! it’s all about that bass! You gotta have bass like that!”. My dad knows pretty much zero about music, nothing about music theory, and (as far as I’ve seen) is workin’ with zilch in the musical talent department. Yet, I really feel like his enthusiasm taught me a lot about art—or at least how people enjoy art (which I would argue is kinda art itself but that’s a rather esoteric discussion).
Anyways, my main point (oh if only I could ever make a main point) is that mashups are fun because people like them. Does that make any sense?:)
