Explode Into Colors, “Sharpen the Knife” (Unreleased)

explode into colors by Sachiko ArakawaWhen the all-girl trio of Explode Into Colors took the Dekum Manor floor late last Friday for Summer of Luv’s inaugural night, the growing crowd knew they were about to see something bordering on brilliant. Claudia Meza, former member of Hornet Leg and Japanther has always brought a vital frenetic energy to shows and tonight was no different. While Lisa Schonber (of Kickball) and Heather Treadway (who has played with Tender Forever) gracefully melded two drum sets, keys and a tambourine into the mix, Meza grasped a bass and microphone. The resulting sound was a ghostly drone funk that seemed to come from far away, a subterranean punk struggle and a slow dance in one. On “Sharpen the Knife” you can hear the gritty clamoring and jittery funkadelics that make the trio so mesmerizing live.

P.S. This was recorded on a Califone.
