Nylon Hearts Portland Music
Have you picked up the latest issue of Nylon yet? Scar Jo is on the cover, though that placement clearly didn’t help her musical debut, as her David Sitek produced disc sold but a mere 5,000 copies during its first week of release. But while she’s crying into her Kleenex, we’ll celebrate, because boy-oh-boy does Portland grace the glossy pages of Nylon this month! Eight pages of Beth Ditto! A Holocene music featurette! There’s also a two page spread about Nike, but that’s not so related to local music, so let’s have our way with the other two items first shall we?
On page 161, the magazine uses four labels to illustrate its “Starting a Record Label” feature, including Holocene Music, the label Holocene honcho Scott McLean and former Portlander Matt Wright co-run. According to the column on the right-hand side (see photo below), the pair have Sub Pop level ambitions. Makes sense, given Holocene Music is coupling with Kill Rock Stars for the Shaky Hands’ next album. Staircase to further success.
Turn the page from there and what do you get? A photospread (shot by Alex Hoerner) of Beth Ditto in LA being fitted by designer Jeremy Scott and hanging out with a hotel cleaning service lady. We soon learn Mr. Ditto is working on a book ode to fashion.
If my photos taken in Wallace Park have whet your appetite, you can view the issue in digital format for free here or pick it up on newstands nationally.
And it must be mentioned that Nylon employed local talent by way of Chloe Richard’s photography. She shot both McLean and that aforementioned Nike spread.

says:I bought one….&…. DONE. I’ll be leaving my copy at Stumptown Division later this evening. lots of actual people in it… yet Scar jo gets most page space of anyone. (Beth Ditto does get a few pages of photos.) This is a good magazine for those who will benefit from hints like “Tilly’s Tips on How to Get a Look” (for your band). Pages of fashion hints to help you look like Britney, or kinderwhore-era Courtney, or, best of all, an 80s sex-bot from your favorite Robert Palmer video… plus! GIANT FULL PAGE ADS for American Spirits! YEAH You’ve come a long way baby….
