LEAK: The Joggers, “Talking at Keith,” Tour LP ‘08
A few nights ago, battling a bit of insomnia, I scrolled through some of the ballots from the Best New Bands poll when I came across an interesting comment. Next to one vote for local math-pop foursome the Joggers was the exact same thought that instantly came to my head upon seeing its name. “Seriously?,” the comment read. “They’ve never been on there!?”
Umm, what the hell!? The nature of the poll (and the music industry, no doubt) is that someone always has to fall through the cracks; for all the Interpol’s of the world, I bet you can name five bands who are insanely better but never really get the rightful praise they deserve. While the Joggers debuted around the time of the “dance-rock” boom, they never really took off on the national stage—even though, as a friend suggested, “they could be huge if they were, you know, British.”
All this leads to “Talking at Keith,” one of three new(ish) songs that adorn the tour-only LP sold at its recent supporting jaunt opening for Stephen Malkmus & the Jicks. The song might see an official release sometime soon, but even as it stands, “Talking At Keith” is totally ace. Taking the spiraling, intricate riffs from 2005’s With a Cape and a Cane as a starting point and re-applying the Glee Club-worthy vocal harmonies from its first album, it’s hard not to get lost in the song—both in the infectious, sing-song melody and the zig-zagging guitar lines that always go where you least expect.
If “Talking at Keith” is any indication of where the Joggers are going with its third LP, then I sure can’t wait to hear the final results. Who knows, maybe NME write-ups are just around the corner.
[Sorry y’all. We have to pull this track (at least for the time being) due to a miscommunication between us and the band. Check out JoggersSpace for more music and look for this one on a future 7-inch and/or album.]

says:Doesn’t “Best New Bands poll” suggest that the band is NEW? I mean, Loch Lamond? I think I saw those peeps like 5 or 6 years ago at a Music Lib Project showcase.

says:it means ‘new to you.’ you can vote for anyone so long as they haven’t been voted in before.

says:I have a lot of love for a lot of Portland bands - many of whom I think are among the best making music in the country right now - but I must say that The Joggers will probably forever be the local band I refer to as my favorite. I saw them by chance the second night I lived in Portland and was totally blown away.
This new Joggers stuff is terrific and, for that reason, I am proud to say that another new track - “Golden Wage” - is on the PDX Pop Now! 2008 comp.
