Deadeye, “Disorder (Joy Division Cover),” Alpha (Self-released)
Most of Deadeye frontman Logan’s—just Logan, thanks—vocals are peculiarly devoid of fire, which contrasts creepily with Deadeye’s powerful fuzzy old-school punk. It’s occasionally uncomfortable listening, because with lyrics like “Let the blood flow” and “I put my face through the glass just to see you smile,” ol’ Logan sounds like kind of a twisted dude on a lot of these tracks.
But here we find the band tackling Joy Division’s “Disorder,” and the influence on Deadeye’s other songs becomes that much more tangible. Joy Division was never big on over-emoting vocals, and in fact Logan sounds like he’s bouncing off the walls when compared to JD’s Ian Curtis. Deadeye’s version of the tune is quicker, with more surf-punk reverb and no synths or drum machines to speak of. You can hear the band struggling to keep themselves in control as the song’s energy builds.
Deadeye is currently on hiatus, bassist Alexfast says, to give him time to work on his side project, LSD & D (a surefire contender for Band Name of the Week were that competition still active).
[sorry y’all, because of some legal stuff i can’t keep this track up. we’ll have to get to deadeye another time!]
