Brand New Band Alert: Viva Voce + Friends = Blue Giant
Kevin Robinson from Portland experimental pop duo Viva Voce sent an excited email to some friends in the press last weekend about his new project, Blue Giant. The band features Robinson’s VV bandmate and wife, Anita, ex-Swords/Project dude Evan Railton and Seth Lorinczi of Portland’s the Golden Bears. “Simply put,” Kevin writes on the band’s top-secret makeshift bio page, “as Viva Voce, Anita and I had played so long as a duo that we’d forgotten the joys of a communal music experience.”
So what is the new ish all about? Blue Giant plays psyched out roots/country pop that reminds of…well, it’s kind of its own thing, really. You might hear some Kinks, the Who, and Byrds influences (all of which were dropped by the band itself in a makeshift press release), but the futuristic Viva Voce production wizardry is totally intact in this new setting, but it’s a different beast, err, giant, altogether.
Like most new bands, Blue Giant went and got itself a MySpace page, and three of the band’s debut, self-titled EP’s five songs are posted there. Kevin says the band will make a debut show announcement next week, and a full length will follow the EP. We are assuming the records will see release on VV’ own label, Amore!Phonics. Robinson sounds extremely excited about the project, and it’s more than a bit infectious. Not going to give you a full review of the Blue Giant EP or anything, but it’s cool enough to have warranted more than a few listens on my iTunes since I grabbed a digital download on Monday.
Here’s a larger look at that trippy album cover

Here’s to the future! I’m sure we’ll be telling you much more about BG in the days, weeks and months ahead. Stay tuned.
