Newspapers, “German Love” (Starfucker cover, Unreleased)
On May 25th of last year I experienced my first house show. After venturing out to SE Portland, I came for Starfucker and got just what I came for. I didn’t come to see a solo Josh Hodges playing a myriad of instruments during his set and bouncing beside fellow fans (though that was cool), I came to hear “German Love” live and in person. It also happened to be a favorite song of another band on the bill that night; Newspapers.
At the time, the only existent version of “German Love” was four and half minutes long, but recognizing a pop gem when it heard one, the Newspapers shortened the track down to a more radio-friendly romp just over two minutes long for its cover. All acoustic with vocal harmonies wafting throughout, “German Love” truly gets the Newspapers treatment with no electronic blips to be found. What with Newspapers being so earnest and Starfucker originating it, there’s just one thing still bugging me: Seriously, what is up with this German love and why won’t she have anything to do with Portland’s crop of indie musicians?

says:OK., call me old school but I really don’t think the song goes anywhere. The Newspapers did a fine job of shortening the piece but that simply shows that the journey is more important than the destination–WHICH IT ISN’T.
“German Love” is probably better as long meditation and lament as it is in the original–which still doesn’t go anywhere.
Will somebody please give these guys a stratocaster and a wah wah pedal?
The second half of the song could kick some major ass.
