Starfucker at Doug Fir (April 5, 2008)
“Dude looks like a lady!” Oh Aerosmith, your lyrics were so spot-on when it came to the packed Starfucker show at Doug Fir last Saturday. There, on the stage, paraded out not one, not two, but three males dressed to the nines (and resembling ladies of the night ever so slightly) for an hour long Starfucker set of new tunes and hits such as “German Love” and “Rawnald Gregory Erickson the Second.”
Before Starfucker hit the stage in dresses, fishnets and wigs, Dat’r tore up the Fir under the light of the disco ball while couples got cozy and groovy up front (to the point where I nearly wanted to yell, “Get a room!” But I didn’t, I just soaked up their frantic set from further back in the room).
Everyone I spoke to commented on how insane the attendance for the night was. When we my friend Marisa and I arrived, there was a line at the ticket booth and inside there was barely room to move (though that didn’t hamper my dancing too much). Starfucker founder Josh Hodges (the group was a solo project, then a duo and now, finally, a trio) remarked from the stage that he wasn’t sure anyone would turn out and just how wrong he was about that hypothesis. Surrounded by the cardboard cut-outs that adorned Blitzen Trapper’s CD release show at Holocene last year and have now become integrated into Starfucker sets, Hodges also made note of how special the show was—that observation was so spot on.
