The Thermals’ Hutch and Kathy to Play First Public Show in Six Years

Before there was the Thermals—and after there was Haelah—there was Hutch and Kathy. Founding Thermals members Hutch Harris and Kathy Foster’s boy-girl folk duo duo was saccharine-sweet enough to coax tiny tears from kittens, yet rock enough to elicit head nods from the same Bad Religion circle pit crowd that would eventually come to view the Thermals as saviors of rock.
They Are Risen!!!
LocalCut has learned that a KPSU fundraiser to be held on April 18 at the Modern Age (in the basement of Portland State University’s Smith Hall) will mark—according to frontman Hutch Harris—the duo’s first real show in six years. Here’s Hutch:
kathy and i played a private party with the castanets about a month ago, but really this will be the first (public) hutch and kathy show in 6 years. I can’t remember exactly when the last show was, but we did tour as Hutch and Kathy for a month in 2002 before The Thermals started.
We should be doing all new songs, some of which are thermals songs, some we’re not sure exactly what they are. but the set at the party we played recently was awesome, this show should be a lot of fun.
But wait, there’s more to the show than this exciting and rare Hutch and Kathy appearance. The rest of the bill includes some of our Portland favorites: Strength, Reporter, the Vonneguts and Typhoon. Bam!
The show will cost between $5 and $10 sliding scale style (but dude, it’s for KPSU, just pay $10 ok?), and will start at 7 pm.
Hutch and Kathy’s debut was semi-recently reissued by Portland’s excellent and stylish Jealous Butcher Records, which is also putting out Colin Meloy Sings Live! on vinyl, so pre-order that ish whilst you pick up the Hutch and Kathy disc.
While Harris says they’re not planning on playing old tunes, let’s consider the comments section as a place to request your favorite album from the folk days, ok? Who knows, maybe they’ll play our favorite (mine would be “I Make You a Song,” which is ADORABLE.)

says:Oh wow oh wow oh wow. If anyone misses this show, they will be kicking themselves later. I’m already kicking myself for not being able to make it.
What are your thoughts on Reporter? I was a big Wet Confetti fan until I left Portland last year. What is there new band like?

says:I’m so bummed I can’t make this show, but I’ll be at a Philosophy Conference in Forest Grove… The real bummer is both the Thermals and Typhoon played the same weekend (though not together) last year and I couldn’t see either band then for the same reason!

says:[…] KPSU is currently in full-on fund raising mode, and the Hutch and Kathy appearance was to promote the duo’s April 18 show at The Modern Age (with—deep breath—Reporter, Typhoon, Strength and the Vonneguts). More on that here. […]
