Play Drums the Kickball Way

kickballRegular LocalCut readers might know already that I lose my shit over Olympia’s Kickball. Though they are not technically a Portland band, I go to great lengths to mention them here on the site, which is why I instated the mostly ill-fated band draft and voted Kickball as my first priority.

Well, turns out it wasn’t totally ill-fated. One-third of Kickball, Lisa Schonberg (also known as “Drummer”) moved to Portland some time early last year. Which makes Kickball, you know, basically a Portland band, which means I can fill LocalCut with Kickball posts.

Oh yeah, the point. So Lisa is now manning an instructional drumming video website called video-drumming. It’s half-blog and half honest-to-god instructional drumming videos, and (the best part) it’s free. I don’t know if it’s intentionally adorable or not, but it’s adorable. Here’s the latest one:

My favorite part is when she introduces the snare drum first and just says “snare drum.” There’s something really funny about that. But despite the general funniness/adorableness of the site, these would also be extremely helpful for a beginning drummer. And her other videos (like the one with Max Roach, Elvin Jones and Art Blakey) are fun, too.

But wait until you see her really play! They gotta get her on Bridgetown Breaks Vol. 3 if that ever goes down. Check out these steez!

That really makes me want to learn to play the drums.
