Let’s Go Outside: Zelda From Start to Finish (Portland to Glasgow, Scotland)

backyardHello, Portland! For those who don’t know me, my name is Steve Schieberl. I moved to Portland about seven years ago and have been producing music under the name “Let’s Go Outside.” In 2005, I signed onto Glasgow, Scotland’s finest dance imprint, Soma Quality Recordings. I’m touring Europe to promote my new album, “A Picnic with the Hunters” (available now at soma records). I’ve finally settled into the West End of Glasgow after what’s been nothing short of a tornado weekend in the UK. Let’s recap…

Day One: Thursday, January 31, 2008

The flight over was a piece of cake. I played the original Legend of Zelda from start to finish on my Gameboy Advance and watched “Into the Wild” before I even realized I’d crossed the Atlantic. I arrived in Glasgow, Scotland Thursday morning to almost the same climate I’d left—cold, damp air blended with a hint of frozen precipitation.

Bent on fitting into what should become my new late night schedule, I did all I could to remain awake until early the following morning. The next hours were spent enjoying the best curry I’ve ever had in my life, drinking very light lagers, and ending up at Sub Club to catch some local DJs and BBC Radio 1’s Mary Anne Hobbs. By 4 am and 34 hours without sleep, I was out cold. I’ve got a new home—a flat on Kersland Street with a kitchen and bathroom shared amongst nine other residents. Until mid-April, this is where I’ll be staying on nights I’m not playing.

It’s the first night I’ll be spending away from my girlfriend, Alycia, until late March, which is very difficult. If there’s anything that’s made me second guess the tour, it’s the time spent away from her. I’m hoping it will all be worth it in the end. Call me sentimental. DO IT!
