LEAK: A Weather, “Spiders, Snakes,” Cove (Team Love)

A Weather - Cove album artWe’d been wondering when we would hear tracks off of A Weather’s highly-anticipated (I don’t usually use that promo-slang, but I know we’re really excited, anyway!) upcoming Team Love album, Cove. Turns out all I had to do was ask, and boom, two tracks were in our inbox.

If I’m trying hard not to sound like A Weather’s publicist, talking about “Spiders and Snakes” won’t help my cause at all. Just listen to it! The production (Adam Selzer and his Type Foundry studio are responsible for that) is perfect for the group’s personal and hushed relationship tunes. Perfect! The quizzical opening lyrics find Aaron Gerber and Sarah Winchester doubling up in fine form as usual, and the chorus retains the mystery of those opening verses. It’s a mysterious song all-around, and after a dozen listens I’m still not finding the plot. That’s exactly what makes this a cool lyrical tune, though. Gerber and Winchester sing like a doped-up Mates of State, and the listener has to make the song personal by way of his or her own internal imagery. But the imagery is certainly conjured by the verses as well as the understated, rainy-day instrumentation.

Cove came in the mail today (such are the perks of my job), and I can’t wait to dig in deeper. Most of y’all will have to wait until March 4, 2008 for that—but I’ve got a sneaking suspicion it’ll be well-worth the wait.
