Hang the DJ: DJ Koolaid
DJ Koolaid comes with dreams of DJing a party at the next Olympics and claims that he has been to another dimension. If you come to PALA Fashion Lounge on any third Thursday, bring your friends and dance to whatever electro he’s playing, it becomes Kool and the Gang! Bad joke, fine DJ.
How did you decide on your DJ name? What’s your real name?
My name is Sean, My name is DJ Koolaid. Koolaid comes from Electric Kool-aid Acid Test. Although mine has also taken on the meaning of one who has taken the koolaid and seen the crystal light, and danced to the electro nonsense. : |
As the Rapture say, “People don’t dance no more, they just stand there like this” - how often do you encounter this?
Well it all has to do with timing I’m sure. When it’s not time to dance it’s fucking not time to dance! …But when the time is right~ DANCE
Ideal crowd?
I would say a crowd fully of rowdy, drunk, neon-wearing, boozehounding skallywags that know how to move. Multiply by 10,000.
How do you feel about requests?
I believe it’s the DJs JOB to refuse requests. If they accept the request, then they become a tool for the requestee, and then they think they can just play you like a fucking jukebox!
Do you DJ full time? / What do you do outside of DJing?
I DJ part time as a passion, and during my regular hours I am a tile setting apprentice. Go figure.
Where can we find you?
Every third Thursday @ PALA Fashion Lounge, with Knights of Neon @ Branx and online.
How would you describe the usual genre you play?
RAW DIRTY BANGING ELECTRO HOUSE with a splash of electronica.
Vinyl versus laptops versus CDs - what is your take?
I use a laptop - it makes sense for my brain. Darrr. It’s out there, might as well adapt.

says:“it is the DJs JOB to refuse requests…they become a tool…then they think they can play you”
that is so disrespectful to your crowd! it is not us versus the djs even if you are playing the music. good luck getting that multiply by 10,000 crowd you are going for, i know i will not be there.

says:I think what he means is this…He can’t start taking requests because the moment he does, he will no longer be true to self. Meaning they will start requesting all the time…then it would be as if he was just playing something the listener already knows they like. Instead he is compiling a “run” of songs, which much thought went into selecting the order, and most importantly, people are dancing because they like HIS pick of music…therefore they like him directly. I can see why you would say no requests Koolaid

says:Etiquette your a floozy huh? Am I right?
Some dj’s are musicians, meaning they create. Much of what can be accredited to a DJ is not only his engineering of the sound but his selection of songs/sounds. Throwing in a request can often be like attempting to put a stick in a spoke. You’d be royally fucking up the momentum. Maybe at a house party can requests fly, but other than that let the DJ do his thing.
P.S bad etiquette, can you imagine ever getting crowds of ten thousand if you are constantly trying to cater to everyone? What would separate you from KayReezy?

says:Ha I love Koolaid and I would say that he is hands down one of the best DJ’s in town. Requests? Are you kidding me? Most of the people on the floor have (hopefully) never heard these tracks before. If a friend comes up and asks for some Kitsune or Kissy Sell Out thats one thing but we don’t play no karoke pop music..

says:I’m very pleased to see DJ Koolaid featured in Hang the DJ. He knows how to give the dancefloor what it needs. I have to agree: a good DJ doesn’t take requests. He or she has to have a strong style and identity to offer to the audience. Some will love it and some will hate, but saying what you want to say, expressing yourself is important. A DJs best skill is reading the crowd and knowing what song is perfect for the moment. DJ Koolaid knows how to keep people emotionally hooked on the music. While it is quite possible that someone in the audience would have a great suggestion, I think it is really not appropriate for someone to disrupt the DJ from their thoughts unless it’s a wedding or house party. I have on several occasions seen him whip the crowd into a frenzy with his fresh electro tracks and remixes. I know he reads the crowd and treats em well. It’s not at all beyond my belief that he will have thousands of beautiful people unable to stop moving to his beats. I really admire his enthusiasm and ambition.
