Photo Review: Tokyo Police Club at the Doug Fir, Oct. 19, 2007

Even in the worst of times, it was the best of times at the Doug Fir on Friday night. First to take the stage was New York’s the Virgin—part-time models with a future hit single on their hands (”Rich Girls”). It was a rather rocky, yet entertaining start when a guitar broke, leading to some rather amateur stalling. After Tokyo Police Club’s Josh Hook loaned the group his guitar, the evening continued, but not before on-stage conversations about post offices and strong coffee.
Next up was White Rabbits. Almost too good. Two drum-kits weren’t enough to contain their penchant for drumming, so in addition to the two drum-kits, the group often had two more of their six members banging out beats on various surfaces. The New York sextet was oh so danceable and my favorite live discovery of the second-half of 2007 (so far).
White Rabbits:
Tokyo Police Club was up to its own hand-clapping hijinks to round out the varied evening of high energy rock and roll. Due to some of the New Market, Ontario quartet being under age, its members were seldom seen wandering about the venue before its set—but nothing could contain the group’s energy once it hit the stage.

says:As much as I like Tokyo Police Club and White Rabbits, isn’t this site supposed to focus on local music? How about photos of some local bands?

says:We try to do plenty of that, too, Slips. I think we wind up with a lot of national shows here because it’s the one opportunity LocalCut contributors get to write about/photograph national stuff that they really like. But I’m stoked to hear someody saying “more local stuff!” I’ll keep an eye out for local shows for live reviews.
