Hang the DJ: DJ Pocketrock-it
By day, he’s Brendan Scott. By night, he becomes DJ Pockitrock-it. His electro tastes are apparently popular enough to be relentlessly accosted by a fan after a recent Cute Alert Crystal Castles show and he’s on the ascent within the scene, managing to score quite a few gigs despite the fact that he only started spinning this year. Within Scott’s first month on the decks, he had a coveted weekly gig and is now on the verge of a biweekly party at Rotture. He makes mix-tapes, mash-ups…and answers questions in regards to his vinyl and laptop jockeying skills.
How did you decide on your DJ name?
At first I was DJ Tanner (a la Full House fame), but then I was told that everyone has used this name, and people made fun of me. I wanted a play on words within my DJ name, so I just made lists. It came down to DJ Pocketrock-it.
“People don’t dance no more, they just stand there like this” - how often do you encounter this?
Very often. It’s really difficult to please everybody, especially at bars rather than clubs. Recently I have just been playing what I would want to dance to and people have been responding to it positively. You can’t really compromise in this industry, you have to be true to yourself and the music you know and love
Ideal crowd?
Trendy bar with fashion forward people who love current electro bands.
How do you feel about requests?
It depends on whether it is ridiculous or not. I have had good requests (”Scissor Sisters”, “M.I.A.”, etc) and horrible ones (Shania Twain, Silverchair…wtf?).
Do you have a story about a particular request or requester?
Just a group of lesbians at this gay bar, they had decent requests, but I could not accommodate them. I decided to play “1,2,3,4″ by Gloria Estefan, and one of the women came up to me and said “What the fuck is this? I wanted Madonna!” So I explained to her that I didn’t have any Madonna and I felt as though she was verbally attacking me. She just walked away. What a bitch!
Do you DJ full time? / What do you do outside of DJing?
I don’t DJ full time currently. I previously worked at Urban Outfitters, and I am now working at American Apparel. I now have a twice monthly party at Rotture opposite fridays from Juicy. We are going to get cray cray!
Where else can we find you?
Occasionally at Crush, and as I previously stated, at Rotture every 2nd and 4th Friday.
How’d you get your current main gig?
Just networking, promoting myself on myspace. It’s all about who you know and how bad you want it.
How long have you been spinning?
Since April of this year - it hasn’t been long, but I have practiced so much since then it’s not even funny!
What songs will we find ourselves dancing to with you?
1. “Bonafied Lovin’” - Chromeo
2. Some Curtis Vodka remix of Kid Sister (I forgot what it’s called but it’s sick)
3. Anything by Mylo
4. “She’s Good for Business” - MSTRKRFT
5. “Office Boy” (CSS Remix) - Bonde de Role

says:[...] Brendan Scott, DJ Pocketrock-it When I was attending art school in Oakland, California, there was a glass blower who was completely infatuated with me. He would show up at my house unannounced and hang out for uncomfortable amounts of time. Trying to win me over, he would leave gifts at my front door. On my 21st birthday, he left 21 red roses along with a hand-crafted glass rose that was immaculate. The gift was perfect, but he wasn’t perfect for me. As much as the situation creeped me out, it was kind of nice to constantly be looking over my shoulder watching out for a mentally unstable stalker….
