The Truly Me Club, “Halfpipes,” from Pop Star on the Lam (Sonic Boom)

trulymeclubThis li’l number from local dream-poppers the Truly Me Club (which is available on the above-mentioned album as well as the latest Failing Records comp) has one of those repetitive, constant instrumental hooks that just grabs right into your psyche and doesn’t let go.

It’s those damn bells! They appear—somehow bright and soft at the same time—out of a spacey, fuzzed-out wash of atmospherics, only to fade into the background and then disappear completely. (Never fear, though, they return toward to end just to drive themselves into the depths of your skull before escorting the track out.)

And all the while, you’ve got these trancelike, Andrew Kenny-ish (American Analog Set) vocals and a track of shuffle-n-stutter, electronic-sounding drums planting you firmly in some cloudy, heavenly dimension. The whole thing’s transfixing, and it’s over in under three minutes. Thanks heaven for the “repeat” button!
