How I Spent My Summer Rock Camp Vacation

STP60989 As you may have gathered from various apologies and late posts here on LocalCut, I spent most of last week in Pendleton amongst Eastern Oregon teens and Portland band members, helping kids learn how to write about music. Incredibly, the excitement level amongst the kids was actually pretty high. Some even skipped out on their bands for hours at a time to kick it in the computer lab with yours truly.

But rock camp wasn’t just about writing. There were some other awesome perks, like seeing kids shred:

Awesome band names and slogans:

Seeing Point Juncture, WA and Heroes and Villains at Great Pacific (PJWA pictured below):

And the awesome show that ended the week in downtown Pendleton last Friday Night:

But perhaps the best part was seeing one of my favorite kids, Weston (pictured below), performing Iggy Pop’s “I Wanna Be Your Dog” with his band, Hey, No Tomatoes (video located below, captured by Deer or the Doe’s Carlos Segovia. Hold on to your hat). Weston was full of hilarious one-liners over the course of the week, but no one really expected him to rock this hard. Just before the performance, Weston received a pep talk from Skylar Norwood of PJWA (who had taught a Punk Rock History class earlier in the week), who asked the pint-sized 13-year-old “Who’s punk rock?”

“I’m punk rock!” Weston replied excitedly. Then he went on to rally the crowd into a frenzy. I was literally crying from sheer happiness. It was like one of those feel good comedies coming to the perfect close:

We spent two days working on a Pendleton Rock Camp blog, which you can find here.

Oh, and The Kill Davids dressed in drag. They also killed it.

Peter Walters, organizer of the camp, was pretty stoked:
