Pseudosix, “Copout,” outtake from Pseudosix (Sonic Boom)

pseudosixSeeing as tomorrow’s the Fourth of July, it seems appropriate to post a laidback, chillin’-in-your-yard number to get everyone in the mood. And this outtake from Pseudosix’s upcoming self-titled release oughta do the trick.

With lackadaisical shaker, a deep ‘n’ mellow bass line and a back beat with traces of calypso à la Harry Nilsson’s “Coconut,” this cut has all the components of a great, lazy-day summer song. And “Copout” has a chorus that welcomes such supine behavior, too: Pseudosix frontman Tim Perry declares, “I don’t want to talk right now,” and–regardless of what he’s actually avoiding–it comes of as a potentially perfect mantra for hammock laying and zoning out.

Later, when he sings the words “a loss or a let down,” I somehow let my brain twist them into “la cerveza” (apparently, I need to get out more). And a little country-tinged slide guitar courtesy of Chris Funk–coupled with a drifting sea of “ooh ooh”s–mellows things out quite nicely toward the end. I think it’s about time to kick off our shoes, feel some grass between our toes and crack a cold one, folks.
