Craig Marquardo Resurfaces with Music Spectator Mag
The infamous Craig R. Marquardo has resurfaced in Portland with a new magazine, Music Spectator. He claims it to be “The Magazine for the Portland Music Scene,” a media source to bring our music community together. More on that later. First, lets talk about Craig.
Perhaps you’ve already forgotten the generally maligned musician, film financier and “journalist” Marquardo. His story could fill the 19 pages of Music Spectator’s debut twice over. The Hood River resident (at last check) has a fairly hilarious and rogue-ish past in our neck of the woods. In 2003, he made a pathetically clueless attempt at bringing Portland major league baseball entirely via the private sector, only to be quashed when the O revealed that the sometimes-journalist had published a “startling candid” Q&A with Leonard Nimoy in a local Hood River paper, that turned out to be total BS. Yeah, the publisher of “The Magazine for the Portland Music Scene” is also the Jayson Blair of the Columbia River Gorge.
It gets better. Quoting from a Portland Tribune profile: “He says he played minor-league baseball in 1990, sang backup with the pop singer Sting at the age of 15 and was wounded in Iraq on an assignment after the Persian Gulf War.” The paper couldn’t verify any of it.
I also dug up an old Portland Communique post about him, his apparently BS resume and the whole baseball ordeal. Read it. There’s 17 comments there, and they’re all pissed.
From John Allen
Craig,
Change your name and practice these these words ” would you like some fries with that? ”
This guy is a scammer, BS artist, Lousy actor, Bull shitter, and a scam artist.
TindyDancer alleges
In a heated breakup with an ex-fiance, Marquardo broke down and confessed that he had never gone to the Gulf, sang with Sting - none of it. He also purchased a purple heart on e-bay and a suspecting ex found the printed receipt! He will go to many lenghts to fabricate and manipulate information to appear bona-fide. Yet the man still remains in business because he can talk a good line of BS!!
Last year Marquardo also got into some shit running for a board seat with the Port of Hood River. Surprise: it was for making things up on his candidacy form, according to another Portland Tribune article. For this episode of being a grade-A d-bag, he wound up with a five days in jail and a whole lot of fines and community service.
I almost feel bad. If he can see fit to start a magazine in Portland under his own name after all of this, he’s truly not-quite-there.
The Magazine
Normally, I hate to rag on an upstart magazine. It’s a bold move to start a print publication of any sort, let alone one regional, and music-focused. I myself was fortunate enough to once be a part of one, slaving for months on a Cascadian culture glossy called Traffic that died sadly and quietly before its second issue. But, when a magazine is so obviously insipid that there isn’t the barest shred of hope, I can’t help it. In fact, I kind of enjoy it. For example: who was the first to call PDX Magazine “a graphically abominable, poorly written ad vehicle.” Well, that would be me.
Now, let us turn our attentions to the newest entry, Music Spectator. The rag–glossy covers, B&W paper content pages–is subtitled “The Magazine for the Portland Music Scene.” Ahem. The cover story is on Chris Isaak, the advertised stories include a Bravery Q&A, concert photos of John Legend and the Killers, and finally a “Artists You Should Know” piece of locals Three Legged Torso and a memoriam to Paul DeLay. That’s dandy: He was a massive Portland figure, but he died three months ago. Heckuva lead time, and way to represent the “Portland Music Scene” with the Isaak cover story, et almost al.
I won’t drag this slam on too long, but let’s pause for a moment on the Publisher’s Notes. The stated goal is “to become the the singular source for Portlanders and beyond for the rich music scene we have available to us.” The facing page is the Q&A with the Bravery, who are as much as a part of Portland’s music scene as the Bowery Ballroom. Marquardo nearly begs for advertisers and then goes on to call Portland’s music scene “a big mess,” with this mag a definite “step in the right direction.”
There’s a couple of really vague CD reviews, a Joss Stone photo spread, a rousing declaration that a band should be able to fill half a venue to expect to play there and the climactic Chris Isaak interview. Contained within the latter is the grating, nonsensical line–showcased in a pull-quote–”If you are gonna download music, steal the machine you downloaded it on (too).” (Chris, first off, you can download music now without “stealing” from the artist. Second…oh, nevermind.) Whether or not you believe this actually came from Isaak is up to you.

Had one BIZARRE experience with him two years ago, when he thought about hiring me to do some PR. We spent 4 and a half hours talking about HIM, as he showed me his endless litany of articles that publically busted him on one thing or another (I believe he showed me his purple heart too). Finally the last 45 mins we spent on an actual job interview. I honestly got the feeling he has some pathological need to crash and burn in public. It seems to go beyond scamming.

says:When this freakshow contacted my husband a couple of months ago to ‘design my magazine in the next five days’ (a-hem, that would be Spectator), he jumped online and did a little research. (Craig told my husband that he’d be soon touring with Sting, among other things (a “fact” he was apparently touting).)
We found some very interesting things. His aunt Jeanne (who deneied his baseball claims in an interview), still works at the local High School where we’re pretty sure Craig grew up (that would be Malden, MA).
The most interesting thing we found was a picture of a homeless girl in Boston, apparently Craig’s sister. Here’s the story on her…pretty sure she also grew up in Malden:
http://www.boston.com/news/globe/city_region/city_seen/photos?pg=33
So, maybe we went a little overboard with our search, but he was so weird (so very weird), that it needed doing. As far as what we found, there’s definitely a strange connection with all these people (the aunt, the sister, and dear Craig).
This guy, at the very least, has some minor psychological issues that, with medication, could be helped. At the most, he should be institutionalized. He probably falls somewhere in between.

Craig is a very good friend of mine, and has been for a few years now. These unsolicited attacks come because of what…that he is publishing a magazine? Is the magazine offensive in some way? Is it hurting you?
Everyone bitches about things in his past that he may NOT have done. Now here is something he IS doing, and he still gets flak. Amazing.
Most of you slamming him, he offered you a job. And this makes him a bad guy? I ask again, what exactly did he do to you? Was he rude, insulting, vulgar, offensive or hurtful in any way? I doubt it.
All this negative energy for a man none of you have ever met. Yet he just published the third issue of his magazine, the one that was so surely doomed to fail. Have any of you read it? In my opinion, I think it’s fantastic. One day he was talking about the idea, a few weeks later, it’s on the street. That’s something I respect, not criticize.
As far as your research, how easily you make assumptions. Especially on such personal matters you have no knowledge of. For instance…Craig doesn’t have a sister. And if you knew anything about him at all, if he did, there is no way he would ever allow her to come to harm.
I dare you to KNOW him and THEN crticize him.
You should all be ashamed of yourselves.

There was a somewhat heated exchange between Marquardo and other members of the forum (while I was a regular contributor I didn’t say much in regards to the whole fiasco). He made several claims that he simply couldn’t back up.
Anyway, flash foward 4 years and I was in a resturant in Portland recently and picked up the magazine because it looked interesting. It sat in my bag until I got home when I was flipping through it and I happened to start reading the articles. I glanced up and saw the name and made the connection pretty quickly. Just to make sure I Googled his name which confirmed the connection.
Wonders never cease to amaze me….

Portland financing deal update
We’re not the only ones skeptical about the plan to bring the Montreal Expos to Portland by diverting income taxes paid by players. Oregon State Legislative Revenue Office analyst Dick Yates projects that the tax revenues from the bill would be only $5 million a year, not nearly enough to pay off the state’s $150 million in stadium bonds, while Oregon economist Joe Cortright points out that player income taxes are hardly “new” revenue, since they’d likely come at the expense of reduced consumer spending in other areas. Meanwhile, Florida movie mogul Craig Marquardo, who claimed he’d build a Portland stadium with his own money, turns out to have claimed a bunch of other things of dubious veracity: like that he played minor-league baseball, was wounded in the Gulf War, and sang backup for Sting.

But wait there is more… He loves to give quotes and then repete these quotes as facts, giving the newspaper that quoted him as the source.
His movie Sway was listed as completed on IMDB.com until he was asked to produce a copy.. Sorry didn’t Happen.. But that one lie was a real winner as he went as far as to name cast memebers, locations on Mt.Hood where it was filmed. Ect and so on.
He claimed he had won a purple heart.. Sorry didn’t Happen. The VFW made him retract this statement after proving that his whole purple heart, undercover navy seal story was another big lie

Truth.
How did most of you find this article in the first place, months after the original posting? It didn’t just happen its way to you. You had to go looking for it. So what does it say about YOU that this large group of people who have never met Craig personally, are seeking out ways to trash him - despite having no firsthand knowledge themselves?
Not much, I assure you.
I was with him the other day, and to be honest, I try to talk to him about what is written here and elsewhere. He brushes it off with a resigned smile and says “What am I supposed to do for people who won’t believe the truth if they heard it?”.
I couldn’t do it. I would be tracking people down…but…that’s a whole different story. Also very nice how people like to throw stone anonymously - friggin pansies. You think that you writing something here is going to do what…? Magazine is still going, he is still singing regularly, still very active in the movie business.
What’s your goal? Should he go to jail? Public hanging? You wanna give him a spanking? Get a life, for christs sake.
When someone gets the balls to call him up and ask him what they want to know, and ask him to prove it - then come here and rant. Otherwise…I don’t need to say it, right?

Truth you ask for: The Oregon District Attorney had no problem finding the truth it was everywhere except coming from Craig Marquardo.
This man spent jail time, convicted of falsify his resume on the Oregon Voters Pamphlet.
The State of Oregon proved that Marquardo never ever worked in the movie industry as a V.P. as Marquardo claims.
The Veterans association (VFW) had no problem telling us the truth about Craig never receiving a Purple Heart or being a Navy Seal or his special mission status.
This wasn’t some erroneous newspaper story reporting these facts this was a documented court case. Marquado had his chance in court to prove his stories but couldn’t as he knew that his lies had once again caught up with him.
Some of us who have met him are astonished that he is repeating these lies once again. Marquardo fails to understand the power of the internet. He has created all the stories about himself that can be easily proven as Lies.
As he is really the only one who believes these stories it would lead us to believe that BlueSky is Craig Marquado

No, I am not Craig, just one of his many friends tired of watching him get kicked by a bunch of idiots. He has too much class to deal with you, but apparently I dont…lol.
Do you actually know the facts of the court case? And of course, I am talking about facts, not just the ridiculous bits of information printed in the newspaper.
The State of Oregon didn’t prove anything, because the case never went to court. Rather than live on the front page for a year and spend a fortune, he pled no contest, and publicly asserted that he did not lie at all.
And the VFW didn’t ‘prove’ anything either. Where are their documents? I don’t remember seeing anything, just one member making comments. If you knew your facts, you would know that the VFW as an organization distanced themselves from the comments made by the individual.
Mr. Walters, not sure why he would go all the way to Pendleton for this, or why anyone in Pendleton cares, but this isn’t how to approach him. His email is fathommpc@aol.com. I know he read the original piece in the paper, but when I mentioned the blogs he wasn’t aware what was written - so…feel free.
But again, no one has answered the question. Why are you bothering? What do you gain? Who are you helping? Why does it matter? Why do you care?
Has anything he has ever said or done ever hurt or even impacted you?
Let’s see if you are man enough…

says:If bluesky isn’t craig, then do I have a bridge I want to sell bluesky.
All Marquado had to do to not be CONVICTED was to prove these tales with simple easily accessable documents. He was going to build a 600 million movie theme park in Fla. But can’t afford a lawyer to help him win this little case in Oregon. He was going to Buy a Baseball team and move it to Portland, but none of his investor friends had a lawyer who could make that case of fraud go away.
He was going to make huge movies filled with name brand stars (see below) but no one in Hollywood wanted to offer him the name of a good lawyer. make that two bridges
Here is some more of Craig’s Master Of the B.S.
