YACHT on a Yacht: The Winners Are…
Phew! We thought it would be easy to pick a winner. It was not. The judging proved so difficult, in fact, that we had to bring in an expert: WW ad designer and Photoshop aficionado Cari Vander Yacht (pictured to the left there). And yes, that’s her real name.
We urged Cari to judge entries on one umbrella category alone: awesomeness. After much deliberation, she chose her top three entries:
In third place, it’s Ben Hubbird, with his Loggins & Messina album modification entry. This entry is part of a triptych, of which Hubbird says (in a rambling email), “History is only a narrative which we arbitrarily assign to a series of discongruous events. My work attempts to lay bare the underlying chaos and serve as a flashpoint for critical discourse and investigation into the true nature of ‘art’ and the true art of ‘nature.’” Whatever.
In second place is my personal favorite entry, Abe Ingle’s psychedelic/Care Bear-esque entry, which I am dubbing “Rainbow Dolphin/Crystal Dolphin” for lack of a better title. It features the artist (in Pee Wee Herman’s body?) sailing the seas with his captain, Jona himself. If we were judging on photoshop savvy alone (which we clearly aren’t: see third place entry), Abe woulda run away with it.
And in first place, it’s Chris Anderson’s epic tale of ship-sinking dogs and the party people that love them, which I have dubbed (with a Bob Saget voice) “Dog Sinks Ship!” I think it was the godlike image of Jona floating above his sinking yacht/battleship that sealed the deal. As promised, Chris also gets to send me an mp3 of his band for use in LC’s “Cut of the Day” section. If Chris has a band, that is.
So there you have it. The winners of LocalCut’s “YACHT on a Yacht Photoshop(TM) Contest!” Thanks to all of our amazing contestants for playing the game. I’d say “see you on the boat,” but I’m going to have to boat-jack the YACHTYacht just to see the performance. So, yeah, see you on the boat.
And now for the parade of losers!
Alex Scharf’s entry was certainly in the running. We especially enjoyed pouty Jona in the back.
Laura’s entry was dope, if a little too high-concept for us. She writes: “Jona and I became enraged when the others bought their tickets in advance leaving none for I, Laura Alice. The Crystal Dolphin was about to set sail when I, with the help of Jona and my gun, captured the ship. Leaving me in the loving arms of Bobby Birdman.” Amen to that! BB is a dream-factory!
We actually gave Noah Marmalefsky’s entry heavy consideration for third place. It’s so simple, but so right!
Ben Hubbird’s original contest entry. Done in paintbrush!
Joann Dang gets some credit here for actually hanging with Yacht, but not enough to propel her into the top three.
Peter Walters from Pendleton writes: “(I once brought YACHT to play Pendleton in 2004 along with Adrian Orange and we ate dinner on a School Bus that served Tacos) I hope no one else enters…” Cari: “I’m looking for something that speaks to me on a less verbal level.”
We had serious ethical problems with awarding tickets to our beloved ex-intern Anika Sabin, otherwise she may well have won. Despite the relatively weak technical achievements here, Jona with the MTV microphone on the Titanic…c’mon. Pretty rad.
Carissa Wodehouse’s entry made things really tough. It’s a pretty impressive work of Photoshop art with multiple inside jokes, but something about it (that terrifying cupcake, perhaps) barely lost the battle for third. Sorry, Carissa.
Easily the most divisive entry of the contest, Nilina’s masterpiece/eyesore was praised by some and despised by others. There was enough LC love, though, to grant Nilina’s wish and award her a special runner-up prize (to be determined). Nilina: “I think a new category should be established. An award for groundbreaking advancements in the techinal field of photoshop. CLEARLY it would be created to further accommodate my entry. And yes, I’m in it to win it.”
There you have it! Thanks again for playing. Stay tuned for our next, even more awesome contest.

says:PHOOEY KABLOOEY! The cupcake is vegan, but there is no way to show that visually. It is thus another inside joke, er, at least a reference to Catch That Beat 3, which had yummy vegan cupcakes. As a baker of vegan cupcakes I simply had to let it loom over the scene. ANYWAYZ, it’s a good thing I already bought a ticket online from Jona’s website, so I’m all set to sail, kids.
P.S. I feel it necessary to mention that I learned a lot in making this and express my thanks to WW. I don’t actually know how to operate photoshop, but now I know a little more. For example, I discovered the magnetic lasso tool, and also how to delete layers. So it’s WIN WIN, as far as I can tell.

(post author) says:It’s worth noting that the champs are all involved in making/promoting local music:
Ben Hubbird plays in the Morals (so do I, which is part of the reason I abstained from judging this contest).
Abe Ingle (aka DJ Invisiboy) is the dancing guy from the Shaky Hands video, and plays in Bats From the Pyramid Egypt (which will make you shake that thang fer sure) as well as The Dot and the Line.
Chris Anderson runs Music For Dozens (www.mfdz.com) which you should check out if you have a band/make music, as well as Grabb.it, and has a band called 2del.icio.us (a potential future bnotw winner).
