Boy Eats Drum Machine’s Favorite Mexican Food
This is sure to start some sort of turf war, but I had to re-post Jonny Ragel’s top five favorite Mexican food options from his Boy Eats Drum Machine recording diary. It’s a little known fact that, aside from being a purveyor of fine electro-pop, Ragel has a doctorate in delicious.
Personally, I spend a lot of time with the $3.99 special at Pepino’s on Hawthorne (two delicious tacos (I usually go with steak), chips and salsa and a soda) and the fajita dinner for two at La Carreta (seriously, $12.99 and it’s sooo good). I’m totally willing to branch out, though. Ragel added in a myspace post that he didn’t mean any disrespect to NE Portland (Ragel lives in Southeast) and notes that La Seranita should be considered a runner-up.
From the BEDM website:
recording diary:
thr 1/04/07
my PDX top 5 mexican food ops:
(it had to be done….)1: mole’ asada at taqueria nueve
2: fish tacos at san felipe taqueria
3: express taco at super torta
4: chile relleno burrito at el burrito loco
5: burrito clasico at cha cha cha
5: dinner plate at ole’ ole’recording can be tedious. but mexican food never gets old.
Truer words were never spoken. Mexican food comes right between oxygen and water on my list of life’s little necessities.
Here’s a video of Boy Eats Drum Machine performing at Satyricon. You can watch it while you eat!

says:The $3.99 special at Pepino’s is possibly man’s greatest achievement, second only to the giant fruity bowl of liquor at the Original Taco House. I almost always go with fish as my taco’d animal of choice, though.

says:I just ate Javiers for the third time in a week…on top of a pepper eating contest with my roommate Leaf. My small intestine is calling for 20K more troops to maintain order and train my existing stomach enzymes to deal with this unexpected development in my eating habits. It’s hell down there.

says:It’s not on the menu at Pepino’s on 23rd, but baja fish tacos for $1 (ask for them, I promise) is the best deal in town. Jimmie, you could skip the chips and get 3 fish tacos and a soda for $4. This would be good on a day when they used bagged not fresh chips.
It’s the only thing I’ll eat, and I’m a 100% Mexican that hates most PDX Mexican Food, nothing comes close to what I’m used to.. Sigh..

(post author) says:BREAKING NEWS!!!! I had the veggie burrito at La Casita last night, and let me tell you, it’s a masterpiece. Perhaps not for the purist though– there are mushrooms, broccoli, etc. in it. But it’s as big as a baby’s head, and comes with reeeeaally dope guac and sour cream. Oh, and their salsa is super-spicy and super good. It’s on Morrison, two blocks east of the bridge on the eastside. Holy cow, you gotta try it. Feeds two.

says:fish tacos for a dollar? burritos the size of a baby’s head? obviously I have some serious research to do. meaningful perhaps only to me sidenote: pepinos was the name of the lil’ mexican joint on 82nd we always walked to growing up. they had fairly plain cuisine. and a galaxian table version. it became a long tenured chinese restaurant called ah fong kitchen (a few blocks north of division right next to the original pho van). is there any great mexican food in montavilla? we usually end up going down to burrito loco by madison high…

says:I agree with Jonny’s picks, however, he doesn’t mention Pepino’s (formerly Una Mas) at all, while listing both Cha Cha Cha and Ole’ Ole’, which are both, to my knowledge, under the same ownership and share a menu. (Am I wrong about this?)
I’m not currently living in Portland, but for a year, every Thursday after doing my show at KPSU, I either drove or took the streetcar to Una Mas and had the Chico Burrito combo (w/chicken) for $3.99, a $1 Sol beer, and a free small side dish of pickled jalapenos, carrots and onions. Whenever I come to visit my hometown, I make sure to have this meal at least once. It is one of the most satiated moments in my life.
And now, I’m salivating.

says:casey- my bad on the moose credit. I’ll add it to the bedm website. (and thanks again for Ytubing that, DA! prepare your left kidney for prompt payment). mr cusick—I have an anecdote for you. but first: my idea (and it’s a doozy). here goes: you know how there are wine tours? with a bus? and people with really toasty faces? ok. same premise. but mexican food. we could take it from the SE to the NE pillaging and leaving discarded burrito wrappers and empty salsa vessels in our wake. how raucous would that be?! I can fit 7 or so people in my lil’ astro van. is anybody hungry?

says:ah science: so I finally got the chance to try pepino’s on SE 38th and hawthorne. the prices were indeed terrific as reported. I tried the fish tacos. not shabby: generous nicely breaded pieces of fish. authentic tasting fresh tortillas. generous heaplings of cabbage. the sauce could use a little more pizzaz but for 3.95 w/ chips, soda, and all the smoky salsa you could ever want I found it impossible to complain. I’ll be back. you know what they say: test and retest…
