Super XX Man Fan Makes Claymation Video for “Collecting Rocks”

Anyone who attended the CD release show for Super XX Man’s X back in April surely remembers that set’s closer: Scott Garred and co. played what’s probably their most lauded song, “Collecting Rocks,” in front of a projected Claymation video that was made by a fan who heard the track on NPR’s online music program, “All Songs Considered.”

As you’ll soon see, it features a sort of bird character singing Garred’s parts and a lovely, pink-eyeshadowed kitty with wiggly ears taking on Ali Wesley’s angelic vocals. The simplicity of the video is so well-suited to the song–which was inspired by Garred’s grandparents–you’d almost suspect that the members of the band commissioned its creation. But, according to Garred, Super XX Man received an email from said fan about two weeks after “Collecting Rocks” aired on the NPR program: “He sent us the video and that was that,” says Garred. “We thanked him to no end, of course.”

I had the impression after Super XX Man’s April show that the video was sent anonymously, but Garred is currently scouring the band’s email list for the name of its creator: “I put out an ‘APB,’ so to speak…I hope he writes us so that we can credit him for his great work.”

Hush Records recently posted the video on YouTube, and it’s quite lovely in the same innocently quirky, whimsical way that Super XX Man’s music is quite lovely. And the point when the video finally unites the two Claymation stars is almost as rewarding as when Garred and Wesley’s playful, echoing vocals come together for the last chorus. Enjoy.

And, for your added enjoyment, here’s a recording (also posted to YouTube by Hush Records) of Super XX Man performing “River, River”–one of the more rollicking tracks from Vol. XI: A Better Place, which comes out today (Nov. 14)–at their CD release show last Saturday, Nov. 11, at Acme.
